Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Brief description

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialist treatment designed to support lymphatic flow, reduce swelling and encourage the body’s natural recovery processes. Using light, precise and rhythmic movements, MLD encourages the movement of lymphatic fluid through the tissues and towards functioning lymphatic pathways.

Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses very light pressure because much of the lymphatic system lies close to the surface of the skin. It can be particularly helpful where swelling, fluid retention or congestion is present, and is commonly used to support post-operative recovery, lymphoedema management and recovery following certain injuries or procedures.

At The Northgate Wellbeing Clinic, every treatment is tailored to your individual needs, health history and reason for attending. Where appropriate, treatment may also incorporate LymphaTouch® or be used alongside scar therapy.

How can MLD help?

MLD can help reduce swelling and feelings of heaviness or puffiness by encouraging the movement of excess lymphatic fluid. It may be particularly beneficial for post-operative oedema, persistent fluid retention, lymphatic congestion and lymphoedema management where appropriate. By working gently with the lymphatic system, treatment can also support tissue comfort and mobility during recovery.

Many clients also find the slow, rhythmic nature of MLD deeply relaxing. Treatment may therefore be used not only for a specific lymphatic concern, but also as part of a wider approach to supporting lymphatic health and general wellbeing.

MLD following surgery

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is commonly used as part of post-operative recovery to help manage swelling and support lymphatic drainage. Depending on the procedure and stage of healing, treatment may focus on particular areas rather than the whole body.

Treatment is always adapted to your stage of recovery. Following surgery, you may be asked to obtain clearance from your surgeon or medical team before MLD begins.

LymphaTouch®

Where appropriate, your practitioner may incorporate LymphaTouch® into your treatment. LymphaTouch is a specialist device that uses controlled negative pressure and gentle mechanical vibration to support lymphatic circulation and mobilise soft tissue.

The gentle lifting action can help encourage the movement of excess fluid while also working with areas of tight or restricted tissue. It can be particularly useful for localised swelling, post-operative oedema, scar tissue, tissue restriction and swelling following injury.

Your practitioner will assess whether LymphaTouch is appropriate and likely to be beneficial as part of your individual treatment.

Scar tissue and lymphatic drainage

Scarring can affect the movement and flexibility of the surrounding tissues and may occur alongside localised swelling. MLD and, where appropriate, LymphaTouch can be combined with scar therapy to work gently with swelling, tissue restriction and mobility around the scar.

Treatment is adapted according to the age and condition of the scar, your stage of healing and your individual circumstances.

What happens in a treatment?

Your first appointment begins with a consultation covering your medical history, any surgery or procedures you have undergone, areas of swelling or concern, current medication and what you would like to achieve from treatment. Your practitioner will also assess whether MLD and, where appropriate, LymphaTouch are suitable for you.

During treatment, slow, light and rhythmic movements are applied to the skin to encourage lymphatic flow. Because deep pressure is not required, MLD feels very different from conventional massage and many people find it exceptionally relaxing.

The number of sessions required varies. Some clients attend for a single treatment, while a short course may be more appropriate when managing persistent swelling or supporting recovery following surgery. Your practitioner will discuss this with you following assessment.

MLD is not suitable in every circumstance. Treatment may need to be postponed or adapted where there is an active infection, unexplained swelling or certain medical conditions. If you have recently undergone surgery or are receiving medical treatment, please speak to the clinic before booking.
